Wedding Planning Tips

Here is a compilation of what I've learned as a bride, as well as tips and tricks for easy planning. It's all of the things that I wish I had when I started my two-year journey to the aisle!

A Planning Checklist

12-18 Months Prior

Congratulations! Announce your engagement to friends and family.
Decide on a type or style of wedding.
Figure out a rough budget estimate.
Pick a date for your wedding.
Start looking at wedding reception sites immediately, and find out about booking and deposits.
Pick a wedding coordinator, if you choose to have one.
Listen to DJs or Bands and narrow down your choices.
Pick your florist and ask about packages, if applicable.
Begin your preliminary guest list.
Decide on a color scheme.
Find a caterer.
Start shopping for your gown and accessories. It's never too early to start!
Choose your videographer and photographer. Ask about package deals and what they include.

6-12 Months Prior

Enroll in a bridal gift registry.
Make your honeymoon reservations.
Order invitations, response cards, envelopes, thank-you cards etc.
Make final arrangements with your caterer. Decide on a bar setup and meal choices.
Look at cakes and choose which you will order.
Draw maps and write out directions to include with invitations.
Arrange fittings for tuxes and choose what style you like.

4-6 Months Prior

Plan your rehearsal dinner.
See your doctor to take necessary examinations.
Finalize your guest list.
Buy gifts for your wedding party.
Finalize your honeymoon arrangements.
Arrange your wedding day transportation (limo, etc.)

2-4 Months Prior

Buy a wedding gift for your fiance.
Mail your invitations.
Arrange wedding day hair, makeup, etc. appointments for yourself and your attendants.
Send a music list to your band or DJ. Don't forget to tell them what you don't want to hear.
Buy your wedding rings.
Have a final dress fitting.

1-2 Months Prior

Update your mailing address and name change with credit companies, mailing lists, etc.
Make sure your attendants know all wedding details.
Finalize reception seating arrangements.

2 Weeks - 1 Month Prior

Arrange to have your cake knife, toast glasses, guestbook etc. brought to the reception site before it begins.
Give a final call to your florist, photographer, and videographer.
Have a party for your bridesmaids.

The Week of the Wedding

Enjoy your bachelorette party and rehearsal dinner.
Pick up your dress.
Make any finalizing phone calls that you feel are necessary.
Relax and try to avoid stress.
Laura's Wedding Planning Tips

  • Budget, budget, budget. Notice that people keep telling you that you absolutely NEED to make a preliminary budget before you begin planning? Well, they're right. Draw up a reasonable and realistic budget. You might even want to divide that amount into different areas of the wedding (caterer, limo, etc.). This way, you know what you're up against when you get estimates from vendors, and what you can and can't afford. Check out the budgeter below!
  • Create your own "Wedding Planner". While there are dozens of great books out there that can help you plan your wedding, you may find in the end that they are not personalized enough for you. For example, what if your reception hall takes care of the catering, cake, and decorations? Do you really need those details divided into separate sections that don't apply to you? Find a good, customizable checklist, like the one below.
  • Plan ahead. No matter how far away your wedding date is, the time flies, and it's better to plan early than procrastinate later. You can only do so much when your wedding is far away, but you'll feel a lot better knowing that your vendors are booked and you can feel at ease with all the details.
  • Try to pay vendors as soon as possible. While you can't pay your caterer/reception hall/etc. until you have the final head count, finances and wedding planning in general is by far less stressful when you have less figures to worry about and fewer people to owe money.
  • Don't let anyone else bum you out. If someone is too busy with their own life to get as involved as you want them to, or if you get less than nice comments from strangers about getting married, don't worry. Those people don't know you, and those that you want to get involved will do so with due time.
  • Don't be afraid to "call people on it". If an usher still hasn't gotten measured for his tux 2 weeks before the wedding, or that one straggler hasn't sent in their reply card, remember that it is perfectly alright to make a courtesy call to them to give a gentle reminder.
  • Don't stress over the little things. So what if the bridesmaids won't wear their hair the way you want them to?! In the end, it's the overall picture that matters, and whether YOU are satisfied with it.
  • Create your own "beauty regimen". If you're 24 years old, you probably don't need to start an anti-wrinkle process or worry about varicose veins... Your regimen is your own idea, however simple or intricate it is. Whether you plan on just growing your hair out and going to a tanning salon or enduring weekly spa visits, do what will make you feel most beautiful on your big day! This is a big day for you and your future husband, but that doesn't mean that others don't have a right to an opinion and to contribute to your plans. Make sure that you keep family members knowledgeable when it comes to the details.
